The Bulls saw their greatest success during the 1990s when they played a major part in popularizing the NBA worldwide. They are known for having one of the NBA’s greatest dynasties, winning six NBA championships between 1991 and 1998 with two three-peats. All six of their championship teams were led by Hall of Famers Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and coach Phil Jackson. The Bulls are the only NBA franchise to win multiple championships while never losing an NBA Finals series in their history.

Jackson cut his coaching teeth with the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association, whom he led to a championship in 1985. In 1987 he became an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls. When he replaced the fired Doug Collins as the Bulls’ head coach in 1989, Jackson wasted no time installing assistant coach Tex Winter’s triangle offense. He also employed some of the loose-reign management techniques he learned from Holzman with a team that featured the game’s finest player, Michael Jordan, and budding superstar Scottie Pippen, a pair who were as gifted defensively as they were with the ball in their hands and who Jackson let rove on defense to spread havoc and create turnovers. The results were unprecedented: six NBA championships (twin ‘‘three-peats,’’ (1991–93 and 1996–98). The 1995–96 Bulls amassed a spectacular regular season record of 72 wins and 10 losses, and Jackson won 200 games faster than any other coach to date.

After leaving the Bulls and taking a year away from basketball, Jackson returned to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, blessed with another pair of superstars, behemoth centre Shaquille O’Neal and wunderkind scoring machine Kobe Bryant, whom Jackson guided to three consecutive championships (2000–02). Jackson stepped away from the game again for a year in 2004 but returned as the Lakers’ coach in 2005. He guided the Lakers to another title during the 2008–09 NBA season to earn his 10th championship, surpassing Red Auerbach for the most titles as a head coach in league history. In 2009–10 Jackson won his fifth championship with the Lakers and 11th overall. He retired after the 2010–11 NBA season.

Dennis Rodman The Worm T-shirt (Pre-order)

Dennis Rodman can be as colorful and unpredictable as his hair.

“You hear a lot of negative things about Dennis Rodman. But you don’t actually know Dennis Rodman,” the former Chicago Bulls star said in the third person. “They just see what they see on the court and see what they read in the papers. They think he’s a bad person.”

In the third episode of the 10-part series on the Bulls’ 1997-98 NBA season, “The Last Dance” showed that Rodman is a complex person. He colored his hair. He sported various body piercings. He was confrontational with opponents and officials. He once dated Madonna and Carmen Electra. But the Bulls also appreciated Rodman’s rebounding, transparency and loyalty so much that they offered Rodman freedom and accountability.

With Scottie Pippen missing the first 35 games while recovering from surgery on his left foot, former Bulls coach Phil Jackson argued that “Dennis is what held us together.” Bulls legend Michael Jordan added that “Dennis was a model citizen to the point where it was driving him (bleeping) insane.” So when Pippen returned, Rodman asked Jackson if he could take a vacation.

THE CONSPIRACY THEORY

It is impossible to cover Jordan’s gambling exploits without discussing his 1993 retirement from basketball and the gambling-related conspiracy theories that flowed from it. Former Bulls guard and broadcaster Norm Van Lier is most often sourced as the initiator of that discussion, though it’s likely the idea would have arisen somewhere.

After the death of Michael’s father, James Jordan, in the summer of 1993, Van Lier began discussing on Chicago sports radio a possible connection between the elder Jordan’s murder and his son’s gambling exploits. The league had conducted two internal investigations of Jordan’s gambling in 1992 centered around checks found during criminal investigations — one during a crime scene investigation at the home of a murdered bail bondsman — and neither had resulted in any public discipline
